The Beginner’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing

The Beginner’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing

Have you tried affiliate marketing, yet?

If not, you’re definitely missing out!

Affiliate Marketing is the #1 way bloggers make an income.

The best part?

You don’t necessarily need your own self-hosted blog to get into affiliate marketing.

Check it out below.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Before we get into the wonderful world of affiliate marketing, we have to define it.

So, what is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is when an online retailer pays the affiliate marketer (you) a small commission whenever a customer purchases their product through your link.

The affiliate marketer’s main job is to provide great content that encourages users to purchase through your special link.

Keep in mind, most affiliate marketers promote their affiliate products through content marketing – or blog posts – but some will post ads directly to the retailer’s landing page.

How do I get into Affiliate Marketing?

  • Start a niche blog
  • Share your affiliate links in your quora answers
  • Post on social media, like Instagram or Twitter
  • Share on Pinterest

What if I don’t have a website?

If you don’t have a blog, you can also leverage social media or websites like Quora, Pinterest, Medium, and other platforms.

Keep in mind, you may not be allowed to post affiliate links on certain platforms. In that case, you usually can get away with providing an opt-in incentive and creating an email list with MailChimp, writing great content and building trust, and then promoting affiliate links that you have tried and liked and provides value.

What is the difference between an affiliate program, network, and product?

An affiliate product is a product that you promote to get a commission on when sold.

An affiliate program is a program that you join with the company that sells the product that you join to promote as an affiliate marketer.

An affiliate network is a website that you can join that makes it easier to join many other different affiliate programs.

Some examples of affiliate networks and programs:

  • Clickbank <– great for beginners
  • Shareasale
  • VigLink
  • Rakuten
  • Amazon Affiliates
  • Commission Junction
  • Awin
  • CJ Affiliate
  • Ultimate Bundles
  • FlexOffers
  • Creative Market

How do I join and get accepted into affiliate programs?

In some cases, you have to have a minimum amount of page views in order to join. However, some programs are open to beginner bloggers, even with 0 views!

Tip: Make sure you have a marketing strategy in place. Many affiliate programs and networks will ask what your marketing strategy is before you can get accepted.

How to get into affiliate marketing: Step-by-Step guide

Step one: Choose a niche

Technically, if you choose not to have a website, you don’t need to do this part.

But before you skip this part, keep in mind that focusing on a niche can still help you out. By writing great content (even if it’s on quora) and honing in on that particular skill, you’ll be able to sell more affiliate products that way. Especially if it’s products you’ve tried before (which is recommended!).

Step two: Research

The next step is to do your research.

Which affiliate products do you want to promote? What do you like? What are you good at? What networks will you try to join? How have other affiliate marketers within your niche sold the same affiliate products?

Tip: When researching how other people write compelling content that sells, never copy. Write it in your own words, and most importantly – make it better.

Step three: create a list of blog post ideas

If you don’t want to build a website, that’s fine. Instead, try creating blog posts on platforms such as Medium or Vocal.Media to link to when promoting your content. However, make sure you look up what is allowed and what isn’t.

Here are some blog post ideas:

  1. How-to’s and tutorials
  2. Product reviews and comparisons
  3. Lists
  4. Cheatsheets
  5. Resources or link lists
  6. Blog series
  7. Infographics
  8. Interviews

The same goes for creating video or podcast content, as well.

Step four: build site (or another platform)

It’s time to build your website, youtube channel, or another platform you plan to be using. If you plan to use a platform such as Medium, Vocal.Media, or Quora, make sure you start by filling out your profile with keywords and SEO-rich content.

Step five: Create awesome content

Using that list of blog post ideas you made earlier, it’s now time to create some awesome content.

You may or may not be able to add affiliate links in just yet, and that’s OK. Once you build up a following, it will be easier to get accepted into affiliate programs.

Step six: build an audience and promote

After you create your first blog post, you aren’t done yet.

Now, you need to build your audience and promote your content. You can do this by consistently creating great content filled with value, and by consistently promoting it through networking, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and more.

Step seven: repeat steps

Finally, repeat steps 5-7, and if you are consistent and fill your content with value, you are almost guaranteed to make money through affiliate marketing!
