There are lots of ways to make money online – many of which I talk about on Simply Kirsty – but no matter what you do, here’s a tip that will help: Try to focus on one thing.
When you’re an entrepreneur (or an aspiring one, at that), it’s easy to tell yourself that you can do it all.
After all, isn’t that what you are supposed to do? Do it all to lower overhead costs or simply because you just don’t have the money in the budget to hire virtual assistants, coaches, or any experts for the skills that you lack.
But here’s the thing: Although hiring other people to focus on one thing, whether that’s the marketing, advertising, email marketing, writing, website maintenance, social media management, or whatever it is – I’m talking about the method you will be using to make money.
Now to be clear, I mostly mean this in the beginning – because the beginning is when you are most likely going to give up. Later on, you start increasing the sources of income so you can make more money, but in the beginning, you should focus on mostly one thing.
Here’s an example: If you decide to be a blogger, try to focus on one way to monetize. Maybe that’s affiliate marketing, selling digital products, or selling ad space. While it may be tempting to focus on both affiliate marketing and selling digital products, for example, sometimes doing this delays the launch of your blog as you spread yourself thin trying to do it all.
So, do me a favor. Take a look at this list, then try to choose one. If you need more options, download your free mini-ebook on ways to make extra money at the bottom of this article.
#1: Sell Digital Products (The right way)
Brainstorming, creating ebook covers, and formatting digital products are easy.
Some even say that creating digital products is easy – and they are, sometimes. Especially freebie opt-in products that you use to gain email subscribers, but when it comes to creating awesome digital products to make money off of – that can be a whole other story.
Here are the basics of how you get started:
- Choose what your digital product is going to be about by choosing something that you know a lot about/have an interest in and by doing market research.
- Choose the format you are going to use (ebook, worksheet, template, contract, photos, logos, ebook covers, courses, etc) and how you are going to sell it (email marketing, facebook advertising, amazon kindle, own website, etc)
- Brainstorm your content and outline the material.
- Market and sell.
With this, there are two options that will help you make the most money:
Option 1: Creating a lot of cheap, low-ticket digital products.
Option 2: Creating less digital products, but higher-ticket and packed with more value (takes longer to create).
If you don’t want to write non-fiction, you can still make money writing fiction.
Novels take a bit longer to make and may not always get you a lot of sales, but if you create a lot of short stories or novellas you can make a pretty good income with this.
You can also make good money by writing short erotica books on Kindle. (Yes, you heard me). When you have 15-20 ebooks in your catalog, you’ll start to make a good income – and the best part is, each ebook only needs to be 3,000-10,000 words each.
#2: Domain Flipping
Buy domains, add value, sell high = profit.
If you can do that, you can make some mad money in domain flipping. You can sell domains for $10, $100, $1,000, $10,000, or even a million dollars.
Well, the chances of you selling a single domain for a million dollars are pretty low, but it is possible and has been done.
If you want to make a lot of money in domain flipping, you need to know what people are looking for and how to really put in the work.
Domain flipping also means investment in both money and time. You’ll also have to read a lot about this field because, as easy as it may sound, it can be quite difficult.
But, it definitely is worthwhile.
#3: Create mini-websites for passive income
Create small niche websites, automate the traffic, and make passive income.
Here’s an example: You can have a 1-page blog with very few articles reviewing high-ticket products, giving how-to/tutorial posts on high-ticket products, etc and use affiliate links. You can also put Google Adsense (or Mediavine) to make money with CPC or CPM.
Basically, you “set it and forget it” – just make sure that every once in a while you make sure things are still up to date, the blog is updated and hosting paid for, yada yada yada.
Create multiple mini niche sites and you can make pretty good passive income.
#4: Be a Virtual Assistant
Selling your services is a great idea if you want to make money online, especially because there are a lot of business owners out there in need of some help.
The trick is building your portfolio and getting testimonials – which really, isn’t too hard if you are smart.
Obviously, when you are just beginning you aren’t going to be going to the really big companies because they are going to take one look at your non-existent portfolio and won’t even bother telling you ‘no’.
You go to the low(er) hanging fruit (not too low, of course), put a nice price tag on your service, then give them the offer that you will do it (depending on your service) for x amount of dollars OR for free if given a testimonial.
And, if you are going to take this seriously, you should definitely create a website showcasing your work and services.
#5: Write articles
Copywriting is a big industry.
You got bloggers looking for people who can write value-packed articles that they can put their affiliate links in.
You have e-commerce sites looking for writers who can draft up nice, converting product descriptions or blog posts that will bring in the traffic.
You got online course creators or authors wanting to sell their digital product and needs a high-converting copy.
And, if you haven’t noticed already, these people are actually looking for copy because – in some way or another – it’s going to help their income.
It may be to get traffic or it may be to convert readers into customers or clients. Either way, many online business owners are going to outsource specific tasks so they can focus on other things – and copywriting is one of those services many people tend to outsource.
And if you are great and have awesome testimonials, even better. That means you can even up your price to earn more money.
Plus, you become a better writer and learn new skills – like time management, communication, and invoicing.
#6: Become a ghostwriter
Selling digital products is a great form of passive income.
And one of the key things to make a lot of money with digital products is consistency. With lower-priced ebooks, especially, the key is having a big catalog.
But writing 20 books, even novellas, can be hard.
That’s where the ghostwriters come in.
Authors will typically come up with the idea of the book and a general outline, then hire ghostwriters to write the book or parts of their book. When they are done, all they really have to do is edit (or even hire an editor), format, create the blurb, then publish.
Think about it.
You (the author) could be making one ebook while you hire 5 other ghostwriters to make 5 separate ebooks. When they are all done, all you really do is the easy parts and then you are publishing 5x faster than you originally would if you worked alone.
You can then build up a catalog of digital products wickedly fast, meaning you can be earning a lot more money.
So, it’s a win-win for both the ghostwriter and the author.
Just, keep in mind that as a ghostwriter, your name will NOT be on the work. Sometimes you may like that, if you are ghostwriting erotica shorts, sometimes you won’t (especially if that book ends up being very popular and you feel like you didn’t get that much money out of it).
#7: Website developer or design
If you are a certified in website development or design, then this one is for you.
If you aren’t, there are lots of online courses that you can take to advance your skills, even for beginners.
If you are a total beginner, though, just know that it will take a lot of time and learning before you get your first client.
#8: Become a Facebook Advertiser
There are two main things I mean by this.
First, there’s the Facebook Advertiser/Marketer that clients will hire to get results.
This means you have the experience, and the portfolio to prove it, that you can make outstanding ads to sell “any” product.
Second, there’s affiliate marketing.
That means you take a product that isn’t yours with a unique link and advertise that product on Facebook (depending on the affiliate program’s rules of course). You then create facebook ads and sell these products and get a commission per product sold.
And, if you really enjoy facebook advertising but want to make even more money, then you can think about going into drop-shipping.
Basically, that’s partnering up with a manufacturer to holds the product while you create your online site, get traffic, and get sales. You’ll handle all customer concerns, but the manufacturer will ship all the items. You don’t have to touch anything.
#9: Become an Email Marketer
If you think email is dead, you’re wrong.
Email marketing has been proven time and time again that with every $1 you spend, you get more in return than social media or other forms of marketing.
If you want to be an email marketer, chances are you are going to at least need a website. If not, you can still do this but it can be a bit harder to get accepted into affiliate programs. If you don’t have a website, you can still make a lot of money just by selling your own digital products.
Here are the basics of what you do, after you have a niche and product in mind:
- Create a landing page with an incentive to capture emails.
- Create emails with VALUE that people actually want to open and read.
- In some of those emails, SELL using affiliate links or promoting your own digital product. Many email marketers will say to promote after a certain amount of emails: value, value, value, sell, repeat. But, it’s not a science. The point is, you need value and good content for people to actually want to buy your product that is related. You can also create an autoresponder to make this fairly passive.
- Drive traffic to that landing page with Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, google ads, Reddit, Quora, etc.
It’s pretty simple.
#10: Start an Online Store
Typically, this option is a bit riskier than something like affiliate marketing.
Because, well, if the product doesn’t sell, you can be stuck with it.
There are multiple ways you can do this.
- Create digital products
- Create physical products (crafts)
- Buy and sell products
- Buy products, add value, sell. (flipping)
- Drop-ship products (aliexpress, amazon FBA, different warehouse, etc)
- Buy inventory, hold in your own garage, sell.
Some of these options will be higher risk than others, but if you do it right they can all be worth it.
Here are places you can sell them on:
- Own shopify store
- Own woocommerce store
